Recently reports had emerged that Newcastle United are interested in signing Paris Saint Germain’s goalkeeper Kevin Trapp. However, the latest reports from Sky Sports Germany suggests that Thomas Tuchel wants to keep Trapp and the manager even wants his goalkeeper to sign a new contract. The German custodian is set to enter in the final year of his contract soon as his deal with PSG is ending in 2020.
He had made just four appearances for the French heavyweights in the season before last, and that is why he was shipped to German outfit Eintracht Frankfurt on loan. Quite a few people expected Trapp to finish his course with PSG, but it seems like Tuchel is willing to offer him another lifeline.
Trapp was a crucial player for Frankfurt as they reached the Europa League semi-finals losing to eventual winners Chelsea. The Magpies have been interested in him after his impressive loan spell with the German outfit. Reports earlier mentioned that Benitez was keen to add more competitions for places for Martin Dubravka.
Does Newcastle United need a goalkeeper?
Martin Dubravka was arguably one of the best goalkeepers outside of the top six clubs in the Premier League. The Slovakian has established himself in the starting eleven and Benitez also has the likes of Karl Darlow at his disposal. Young goalkeeper Freddie Woodman is also a top upcoming option. Woodman is a golden glove winner at the u-20 World Cup for England where the Three Lions won the title.
Therefore Benitez even has decent backups options. However, we feel that Woodman and Darlow might look to move away from the club in search of regular game time. So, in that case, the Toon might feel the need to sign a new goalkeeper.
Great news for Benitez?
With Tuchel keen to keep Trapp, Newcastle United are unlikely to sign him anymore. However, we feel signing him would have been unfair on someone like Dubravka who has done exceedingly well at the club. Moreover, we think that Trapp wouldn’t have come to St. James Park’ until he was guaranteed first-team football.
It is always good to have competitions for places, but a goalkeeper is a tricky position to have too much competition as there is only just one position for the taking. We feel that PSG’s stance on Trapp isn’t really a blow for the club and they have enough depth in the goalkeeping position. Until and unless there are departures, the club doesn’t need to sign any custodian. All in all, this update is actually a great bit of news as; hopefully, Rafa will turn his attention to the other parts of the squad that needs strengthening.
