Recently reports (Daily Record) had emerged that Celtic were in the race to sign Chelsea’s defender Fikayo Tomori. The centre back had an impressive loan spell with Derby County where the Rams faltered on the final hurdle in their bid to move to the Premier League. Nevertheless, the young defender played a massive role for Derby in the heart of the defence.
Derby missing out on Premier League football should have been a good piece of news for the Hoops. However, Tomori recently revealed that he would again be willing to play for the Rams. The defender was quoted as saying, “Of course,” when asked if he’d go back to Derby next season.
The defender continued, “I have loved it. I grew so much as a player. Derby is such a great club. The manager has shown me a lot of confidence playing me in a lot of games. I have nothing but good words to say about Derby, the club, the fans and my team-mates.”
There is no doubt that Tomori would be a top addition for Neil Lennon. However, now it seems like Celtic will need to really step up if they want to sign the defender. We feel that Champions League football is something which can turn Tomori’s head and that can do the trick in terms of luring the player to Parkhead.
Why Celtic need a defender?
Dedryck Boyata was the mainstay for the Hoops in defence in the past few years, but he has now joined Hertha Berlin. Filip Benkovic’s loan spell is also set to expire, and the Hoops can lose two defenders. Brendan Rodgers has indicated that he can send the defender again to Glasgow on a loan spell, but that isn’t guaranteed at the moment. Therefore Celtic needs to sign a defender or two in the summer.
Why will Tomori be a top signing?
It is likely that the Hoops will only be able to land him on a loan spell. Tomori played a huge role for Lampard as he played in 55 games in all competitions. For a young and inexperienced defender, Tomori showed a lot of maturity in defence. His decision making was often right, and his impressive pace and strength made him a reliable choice for Lampard.
Tomori will definitely be a top signing for the Hoops. He also has that physical side to his game, which should help him in the Premiership. However, it seems like Tomori has taken a liking to play at Pride Park as even after missing out on promotion, the centre back is willing to play for them again.
