Celtic have maintained their dominance in Scottish football as they took away all the honours once again and secured yet another treble. However, the club needs to go through a significant rebuilding phase in the summer as quite a few players are on the verge of seeing their contracts out. One player who is expected to depart from the club is Croatian centre back Filip Benkovic as his loan spell is about to expire.
However, the player recently indicated that he would be willing to move to Celtic again. That is a change of tune from the 21-year-old as in February this year he claimed that he wants to play in the Premier League after the end of the season. But maybe he realised that staying at Celtic Park guarantees him game time and that is better for his overall development.
What did Benkovic say?
Benkovc recently said (Herald Scotland), ”We will have to wait and see what happens in the summer and what is the plan for me next season.
“I wouldn’t rule out coming back to Celtic, and you never know where life will take you. I don’t know what will happen, but I really enjoyed my time at the club. I’m so proud to have played for Celtic, and I am so thankful for everything they did for me.”
Massive boost for the club and Lennon!
This certainly is very positive news for the Hoops as the player himself has indicated that he is open to a Celtic move. Meanwhile, a few weeks back Brendan Rodgers, the manager of Leicester City claimed that he would be willing to send Benkovic again on another loan spell. All the parties seem to be willing here, and Celtic can make a massive breakthrough if they can secure the former Dinamo Zagreb defender again.
The Hoops have lost the services of Dedryck Boyata who was a dominant figure at the back. Losing Benkovic in the same transfer window would have been a blow for the club. The defender was injured for most of the second half of the season, but he played a pivotal role in first 4-5 months.
Defensively, Benkovic has all the attributes needed from a top defender as he is strong in the air and knows when to go into a challenge and when to sit back. However, what makes him even better is his ball distributing abilities as he always looks calm and comfortable.
One can term the 21-year-old as a complete defensive package, and the Hoops should now do everything to bring the defender back again on another loan spell after the recent update from the Croatian.
