According to the latest reports from Leeds Live, Leeds United have started to make transfer plans for the upcoming season, and they have already made a move for Forest Green’s midfielder Reece Brown. Like Leeds United, Forest Green lost in the League Two playoff semifinals to Tranmere. The Whites were linked with him even a few weeks back, and it was mentioned in the report that if Forest Green got promoted to the League One, then Brown would stick with them.
However, with the elimination, Forest Green are likely to lose their star midfielder, and Leeds United seem keen on him. Brown is going to be out of contract soon, and he is going to become a free agent in the upcoming weeks. Reading and Bristol City were also said to be interested in him at one point.
The former Birmingham City player played a massive role for his side in the League Two as he contributed with 11 goals and 15 assists this season. Those are some brilliant attacking returns for a central midfielder, and it is no surprise that clubs from the higher division are circling him for his signature.
It is now clear that Leeds United will continue to play in the Championship in the next season and the club will have to change their transfer plans drastically from what they must have been planning. Brown has represented England at the u-20 level, and he seems like a decent bet for the Whites.
Why does Leeds United need to add depth to their squad?
The season ended in an underwhelming way for Leeds United, but they had overachieved for the most parts with the squad they had. Bielsa had to continually rely on academy players throughout the season given the lack of depth and injury issues.
Midfield is known as one of the most energy-intensive positions in football, and Leeds United had someone like Mateusz Klich play all their games in the Championship this season. Bielsa’s hands were often tied as he didn’t have plausible options on the bench, and there were various occasions when Klich had looked jaded.
Brown will add the much-needed depth in midfield, and his attacking returns showcases that he can pick out a pass or finish off moves in the final third. That has been another issue for the Whites this season as they failed to convert their chances after good build-up play.
On a free transfer, 23-year-old Brown can be a shrewd signing for the Yorkshire outfit as he will add depth and competitions to place in midfield.
