According to the latest reports from the Daily Record, Rangers are plotting a move for Derby County’s left-back Max Lowe. It is believed that Derby would not let the player leave permanently, and so Gerrard can only get him on loan in the transfer window. The report adds that Gerrard has already contacted his former national team-mate for the transfer of the defender.
Competition from Aberdeen
Lowe has had two 6-month spells at Aberdeen this season, and he even managed to make two appearances for the Rams in January. Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes has also shown an interest in having the left-back again on a loan spell so we can expect the two Scottish heavyweights to tussle for the defender.
It is being said that Lampard could be in favour of sending Lowe back on another loan spell as he is getting regular minutes under his belt. The Rams rate their former academy product highly, and they want to see him come good at Pride Park in the future.
Derby County meanwhile are just one win away from promotion to the Premier League, and they will add more reinforcements to their squad if that happens. That could mean that Lowe is pushed further down the pecking order in the next season.
Is he needed at Rangers?
The 22-year-old made 28 appearances in the Premiership this season and came up with two goals and two assists. Rangers signed Borna Barisic in the summer of 2018, but the Croatian has failed to come up with the performances which were expected of him. Injuries also played a part as Barisic has been troubled with reoccurring issues. Recently reports came out that Gerrard was unhappy with certain first-team players including Barisic and he could look to sell them in the summer.
The player has however claimed that the media blew things out of proportion. However, if Rangers are keen to land Max Lowe in the summer, then Barisic might be sold. Rangers have Andy Halliday and Jon Flanagan who have done decently filling in the left back position even though that isn’t the natural position for both of them.
We feel that Gerrard should keep hold of Barisic for another year as he is too good a talent to be shipped away after just one season. The 26-year-old started well, but injuries haven’t helped him in finding a regular place in the starting eleven. Lowe is a decent bet, but he would be an unnecessary signing if Barisic stays as Rangers will have three plausible options for the left back position. The Derby man would anyway want to join a team where he would get regular opportunities. Therefore Gerrard should keep Barisic in the summer and thereby the signing of Lowe won’t be necessary for the Gers.
