According to a recent report by Marca, Real Madrid are prepared to push hard to secure the signature of Olympique Lyonnais left-back Ferland Mendy during the summer transfer window. The same source has also claimed that Los Blancos had sent two of their delegates to negotiate a deal with Lyon to bring the French defender to the Spanish capital at the end of this campaign.
The Recent Rise Of Ferland Mendy
The 23-year-old came through the youth ranks of AC Le Havre before sealing a move to the Lyon Olympic Stadium in the summer of 2017. Mendy has gradually established himself in Lyon’s first-team and enjoyed a solid campaign for them this season.
The French defender made a name for himself at the Ligue 1 club as he put in a series of commanding displays at the left-back position during this campaign. The Meulan-En-Yvelines born talent has featured in 42 matches for Lyon this term, scoring three goals while grabbing three assists in all competitions.
More importantly, he has made an average of 1.4 tackles, 1.1 interceptions and 1.2 clearances per game in the French top-flight so far (Stats taken from Whoscored). Mendy has also earned one international cap for France and has the potential to play an integral role for his country in the coming years.

Mendy boasts blistering pace and can make penetrative runs down the left flank. He is also physically strong and is quite a hard man to beat in the air. However, there are some question marks over his defensive capabilities as he can sometimes leave his teammates vulnerable at the back.
Mendy’s Acquisition: Wise Move For Zidane?
If Real Madrid are looking to sign him to improve their squad depth, then it makes a lot of sense for them to go for a promising full-back like Mendy. On the other hand, if Zinedine Zidane is looking to add more quality to his first-team, then he is better of opting for a more reliable option at left-back.
Los Blancos cannot afford to endure another disappointing season next term so they would be foolish to take too many risks when acquiring players in the upcoming transfer period.
