According to a recent report by the Daily Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur are keeping tabs on Benfica midfielder Gedson Fernandes ahead of a potential £35m deal in the summer. The same source has revealed that Spurs have moved ahead of the queue in the race to secure the services of the Portuguese starlet at the end of this campaign.
The Rapid Rise Of Gedson Fernandes
The 20-year-old has enjoyed a fantastic breakout campaign after putting in some glorious displays for his side during this season. He has made a total of 41 appearances for Benfica this term, scoring three goals while grabbing six assists in all competitions.
Fernandes came through the youth ranks of Benfica before finally establishing himself as a first-team starter last year. At the tender age of 20, he has also secured two international caps for the Portuguese national side having represented his nation at various youth competitions during his youth career.
The Benfica starlet is versatile enough to play in multiple positions across the midfield. Fernandes primarily operates as a central midfielder but is equally comfortable when filling in as a left winger or in the number 10 position.
What Will The Portuguese Whizkid Bring To White Hart Lane?
Fernandes has decent pace and can make some driving runs from midfield without losing possession of the ball. He is also a powerhouse at the centre of the park as he can win a lot of aerial duels due to his incredible upper-body strength. However, the Portuguese wonderkid is yet to prove his worth outside Portugal and so Spurs would be taking a gamble on him if they decide to make a move this summer.
The addition of a player of Fernandes’s potential will undoubtedly bolster Mauricio Pochettino’s midfield options at the new White Hart Lane. Spurs have found it difficult coping with injuries this season and so the Portuguese starlet could be a clever signing who can come in and play as a back-up to the likes of Christian Eriksen, Delle Alli and Moussa Sissoko at the North London club.
Should Spurs Sign Fernandes For The Future?
Pochettino could be the ideal man to get the best out of Fernandes after the Argentine head coach already managed to develop the likes of Davinson Sanchez, Oliver Skipp and Harry Winks in recent seasons. He will be a brilliant acquisition for Spurs in the long-run, so Daniel Levy should consider bringing him to England this summer.
