According to the latest reports from the Sun, Tottenham Hotspur are going to target Bolton Wanderers’ young talent Luca Connell in the upcoming summer transfer window. Bolton are going through a major crisis right now, and they could end up losing some of their promising players.
18-year-old Connell is one of the upcoming talents from the club, and he could depart for almost free as Tottenham will only need to pay compensation fee as the midfielder is in the final few months of his contract with the club.
Bolton have been relegated from the Championship, and they are also said to be in a debt of £41.6m. Bolton had to cancel their fixture against Brentford not too long ago as players refused to play because of unpaid wages. With such a situation developing, the club could be torn apart further as players are likely to depart from th club soon.
Connell is even wanted by the likes of Wolves, Everton and newly promoted Norwich City. Southampton and Brighton tried to bring in this versatile midfielder in January, but they had their bids rejected. The 18-year-old started as a left wing-back, but given his overall quality on the ball, he was shifted to play in central areas. Now he predominantly plays as a defensive midfielder.
Why does Tottenham need to add depth in midfield?
Mauricio Pochettino has signed just one player in the last 18 months, and there is no doubt that he would want to reinforce his squad in the summer. They lost the services of Mousa Dembele in January and Pochettino’s squad has been stretched in the last few months with injuries to the like of Harry Winks and Eric Dier.
What to expect from Connell?
Connell is unlikely to make an impact in the first team straight away as he is still a work in progress. The 18-year-old made 12 appearances for Bolton Wanderers this season, and it is clear that he is capable of playing at bigger and better clubs in the future. The Irishman looks calm and composed on the ball, and he can carry the ball from the back.
To go with that, he can get stuck into the opposition in the middle of the park as he is willing to do the nitty gritty job. For almost a free transfer, Spurs can consider this talented prospect in the summer. The North London club might be able to beat their other rivals to Connell’s signature as they have now established themselves as a top-four club.
