Celtic have continued with their domination of Scottish football, and they are just a win away from securing a ‘treble treble’ after wrapping up two trophies already this season. The Hoops though will have a vital summer transfer window up ahead as quite a few players are in the last few days of their deal and other players’ loan spells are expiring.
Amidst all this, the latest report from the Sydney Morning Herald claims that Premier League clubs want to come after Celtic’s playmaker Tom Rogic. The Australian international is drawing interest from the likes of Southampton and Leicester City. It is no surprise that quite a few Celtic players are being linked with a move to Leicester City after Brendan Rodgers took over the mantle at the King Power Stadium.
It is believed that Celtic value the playmaker at somewhere between £15m and £32m. The 26-year-old has had a bit of a stop-start season because of injuries, but at his best, he continues to remain a crucial player for the Bhoys. One can understand why Celtic are demanding such a hefty price as he has his contract at Celtic Park until 2023.
Therefore the Bhoys should be in a strong position to negotiate. However, a bid of £20m could definitely tempt the club. Ryan Christie’s emergence this season has given Celtic a lot of hope in the attacking third and the Scotsman was brilliant when Rogic was unavailable. The Australian wasn’t at his influential best this season as he has managed only three goals and five assists in the Premiership.
Why is Rogic important for Celtic?
Outright no. 10 are a rare breed to find these days, and Celtic must be glad that they have someone like Rogic at their disposal. The playmaker had played a crucial part for the Bhoys in previous seasons as he has 35 goals and 29 assists for Celtic. His vision and ability to open up defences make him a crucial player in the attacking third.
Should the club sell?
Celtic are already going to deal with a lot of departures in terms of loan players. However, a £15m-£20m bid from Premier League club seems too good for us to ignore. Celtic should accept the offer if the likes of Leicester or Southampton come up with a bid like that as Christie has shown this season that he can replace the Australian.
The Bhoys can easily sign another replacement for that kind of fee, and they can invest in other areas as well to reinforce their squad which needs replenishing. It remains to be seen whether Leicester or Southampton would look to match Rogic’s valuation in the summer.
