In a recent interview with Marca (via the Metro), Celta de Vigo striker Maxi Gomez has put cold water to the speculation linking him with a move to Liverpool during the summer transfer window. The Uruguay international addressed rumours about his future and told Marca (translated by the Metro), ‘There are many comments through social networks, what if I sign for Barcelona, if I go to Liverpool… ‘I am very calm, and in Vigo, I feel very comfortable.’
This recent development will be a bitter pill to swallow for the Reds as they could have benefited from recruiting a quality forward in this offseason. Jurgen Klopp needs to bring in more competition for Roberto Firmino so that he can push the Brazilian sensation to improve his game next season. Hence, Gomez would have fit the bill perfectly at Anfield so it would be difficult for the Merseysiders to find a suitable alternative for the South American prospect.
Gomez’ Fantastic Campaign In Spain
The Uruguayan frontman has enjoyed an impressive season with Celta de Vigo this term after putting in a series of game-clinching performances for them during this campaign. The former Defensor youth player has made 34 appearances for the Spanish side this term, finding the back of the net 13 times while creating five assists across multiple competitions. He has also featured in 11 international matches for Uruguay and has registered one goal for his country so far.
What Does The La Liga Goal-Getter Bring To The Pitch?
Gomez can be a real handful inside the opposition penalty area as he tends to get shots in at goal even when he is not performing at his best. The South American goalscorer is physically dominant in the opposition half and is also an effective dribbler with the ball at his feet. However, he doesn’t contribute too much defensively which can make him a liability on the pitch when his team are not in possession of the ball.
Missing Out On Gomez: Massive Blow For The Reds?
The 22-year-old has the potential to become a world-class striker in the coming years, so it will be a big blow for Liverpool if they end up missing out on him this summer. Klopp will have to find a suitable alternative if he intends to boost his squad depth ahead of the new season.
