According to the latest reports from the Scottish Sun, Real Betis won’t make a bid of £20m for Rangers’ star striker Alfredo Morelos. Recently reports had emerged that the La Liga outfit was looking at Morelos as a possible transfer target, but they won’t be looking at Morelos anymore.
It is not clear what has put them off, but this is a piece of good news for Rangers as they are showing that they are good enough to ward off interest from Spanish top flight clubs. Real Betis are currently occupying the 12th spot on the table, and they are set to lose Jese Rodriguez and Sergio Leon.
Gerrard has already made it clear that all his players are available for sale but for the right price. It is clear that Ranger will demand something close to the £20m mark for Morelos. The Bears signed him for £1m two years back, and this deal can be crucial for Rangers on and off the pitch.
Why are prospective clubs sceptical?
Morelos has been linked with quite a few clubs, but no club has yet put in a bid close to the £20m mark. The forward hasn’t helped his chances by earning a red card in the all-important game against Celtic. There is no doubt that quite a few suitors would have had their eyes on him on a game like that, and what Morelos did probably hampered Rangers’ chances of getting a price for him just based on his footballing abilities.
Prospective clubs would know that Morelos could turn out to be a gamble as he has let Rangers down on numerous occasions this season. Five red cards for a striker is almost unheard of, and until the Colombian international shows maturity, Gerrard is unlikely to get the best price for him.
Worrying Sign for Gerrard?
The Bears have played their card right as they got Morelos to sign an improved contract recently. This should put them in a strong position to negotiate for the striker. If Rangers don’t get their asking price, then they should keep hold of the 29 goal man for another year.
Hopefully, from Rangers’ point of view, the striker will show more maturity in the upcoming season (if he stays). For now, Rangers wouldn’t mind Real Betis pulling out of the race as they should be in no hurry to sell their attacking ace. The striker is back available for selection after serving his four-match suspension for his red card against Celtic.
