According to The Times, Everton manager Marco Silva is exploring the possibility of securing a deal for Andre Gomes in the summer. The Portuguese mastermind recently admitted his interest in his fellow countryman, who is currently on loan from Barcelona.
The same report claims that the midfielder is valued around £30 million. Tottenham Hotspur are also said to be interested in his services.
Everton’s midfield problems
Everton have gradually improved under the tutelage of Silva this campaign. But, their lack of resources in the midfield department has become a bit of a problem for the former Watford manager.
The highly experienced Morgan Schneiderlin hasn’t been able to make an impression in the starting lineup, mustering just over 650 minutes of league football. James McArthur’s injury, early in the season, has kept him out of the first-team while Tom Davies’ qualities going forward are better suited in a more attacking role.
Gueye’s transfer saga
Gueye has been a vital part of Everton’s midfield this season. His ability to rotate possession and raise the tempo of the game has served the team well under Silva.
However, the Senegalese international has flirted with the idea of leaving Goodison Park next season. Manchester United, for one, have already identified Gueye as their desired replacement for Ander Herrera – as reported by Evening Standard.
This could be a massive blow for Everton. It also means that Gomes could potentially turn out to be an indirect replacement for Gueye, should he end up rejoining Everton in the summer. But how does he stack up against the Senegalese international?
Gueye vs Gomes: A statistical overview
From a tactical perspective, both the players can operate as deep-lying midfielders. They have attained an excellent pass completion rate of 84% this campaign.
Gomes’ ability to skip past defenders (1.6 successful dribbles per game) could potentially make him a better ball-carrier. Gueye, in contrast, has managed only 0.7 dribbles per game.
However, the Portuguese international lags behind in terms of defensive contribution. His tally of 0.8 interceptions and 1.5 tackles per game are significantly lower than Gueye’s 2.2 interceptions and a whopping 4.3 tackles per game, which is highest in the league this season.
Final verdict
Everton should go all out for Gomes, given his quality not only as a ball-carrier but also as a deep-lying playmaker. The 21-year-old can fill the large gaping hole that will open up, should Gueye leave the club in the summer.
The addition of Gomes will also add more depth in midfield for Silva. Also, at the age of 25, he can potentially turn out to be a smart long-term investment for the Toffees.
