According to the latest reports from the Telegraph, Tottenham Hotspur will target Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes who is currently on loan with Everton. It is believed that Spurs chairman Danie Levy is ready to sanction a £30m move for the Portuguese midfielder.
This should come as a blow to the Merseyside club as they were considered as the frontrunner to land the midfielder. Even Marco Silva acknowledged last month that he would want to have the 29 times international midfielder at Goodison Park for the next season.
Why are Spurs a major threat?
Tottenham have come up leaps and bounds in the last few years under Mauricio Pochettion, and the North London club has established itself as one of the Premier League heavyweights. Spurs have stuttered a bit in the top four race, but they are one of the favourites to finish in the Champions League places. Moreover, they are also in the Champions League semi-finals, and the club is continuing to improve season after season.
Everton are unlikely even to offer Europa League football to Andre Gomes next season, and that could be a problem for them when it comes to signing Gomes permanently. The Toffees have continually been linked with him in the past year, and various reports have claimed that the club would look to sign the 25-year-old midfielder permanently.
What works for Everton?
However, Everton might have one edge, and that is the player has already settled in at the club, and he might want to continue with them from here onwards. At Spurs, he will have to fight for his place and establish himself before he gets regular game time so that is one thing which can go in Everton’s favour.
It is clear that the midfielder will find it hard to establish himself at Barcelona. At Everton, he has managed to get regular minutes as he has made 26 appearances in the Premier League this season. The 25-year old has been inconsistent on occasions, but he has shown enough evidence that he would only get better from here onwards.
Tottenham the favourites to sign him
His ball retention and technical ability are impressive, and it is no surprise that someone like Tottenham are looking at him as a midfield option. Spurs haven’t spend a penny in the last two transfer windows, so we expect some activity from them in the upcoming window. The North London club sold Mousa Dembele in January and Gomes is likely being targeted as his replacement. We feel that the entry of Tottenham is a major blow given that they can offer him European football.
