According to the latest reports from the Daily Mail, Jose Mourinho’s odds of becoming the next Celtic manager has been slashed dramatically. Paddy Power recently had to cut down the odds from 66/1 to just 14/1. Quite a few names have been doing the round in the past few months, and there is no doubt that this is the most high profile name they have been linked with so far.
Is Lennon the answer for Celtic?
Neil Lennon is still the favourite to take the top job, but some Celtic fans would be dreaming about some big name taking over. The Northern Irish manager hasn’t done much wrong, but the Celtic of the Brendan Rodgers era has been missing in the past few months. The Bhoys have struggled to score goals freely, and the team has looked devoid of ideas.
Settling on Lennon would mean that Celtic are setting up for mediocrity. Don’t get us wrong; we do feel that he has done a good job in steadying the club when Rodgers left it in a turmoil all of a sudden. But we don’t really see Lennon being able to implement his blueprint on this talented side and being able to take the players to the next level.
Celtic pulled some massive strings and paid as much as £5.3m to get Brendan Rodgers to Parkhead. The result was there for everyone to see as Rodgers not only won titles but blew away their rivals in style. He took the team to the next level.
Chances of Mourinho taking over?
The Portuguese tactician received some flak for his stint with Manchester United, but the problems at the club are more than an under-performing manager. Mourinho has often taken high profile jobs after his stint with Porto. But maybe he might be keen to return to football in a less pressure job, and Celtic could be the right destination for him.
However, there is only an outside chance of this happening and Celtic fans shouldn’t get their hopes up. The Hoops are longing to see an impressive European campaign for a few years now, and Mourinho’s ability to organise the side can take them on to a special journey in the top European competition.
But his wages could be hard to afford for the club, and Mourinho doesn’t look like a long term managerial option to us. There are obviously quite a few positives of getting the two times Champions League winner at Celtic Park, but as of now, we feel that its just run of the mill rumour.
