Liverpool’s versatile young defender Joe Gomez has been targeted by Premier League club Bournemouth as well as Championship high fliers Huddersfield Town. Gomez, who had to deal with one injury after another since Jurgen Klopp took over at Anfield, had managed to break into the senior squad under previous manager Brendan Rodgers.
Klopp is also an admirer of the 19 year old and rates him highly but his injury has not allowed him to feature with the team so far. At this moment, Liverpool are playing very well and has hit rhythm under the tutelage of the new manager. Considering this, it is a bit difficult for him to feature in the first team. With the club not qualifying for the Europa League, there is also not a lot of rotation needed by the manager which makes things more difficult for the defender.
Huddersfield Town, who are sitting 4th in the Championship currently, are interested in offering the defender the chance of first team football which he severely lacks at the moment. However, the club is reluctant to let the player leave as he has only just returned from a year out through injury and are only focused on getting the player back to full fitness. Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe has also offered a similar deal to the player with a chance of first team football. The Merseyside club however, are more inclined to ease him into competitive action with the U-23 team, just like they have done with Danny Ings after his injury.
David Wagner, the manager of Huddersfield Town is one of the best friends of Klopp having been the best man at his wedding and he is hoping to utilize his personal relationship in getting a deal done for the defender. While a move to the Championship would provide Gomez the chance of competitive football on the stage where he first made a name for himself playing for Charlton Athletic, extra caution should be taken to manage the defender so that he can take his time without putting too much stress on his body. Having suffered from an anterior cruciate ligament injury, Gomez must thus tread very carefully and try to take one step at a time on the pitch as well.
Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth are also a nice proposition as he will have the chance of featuring in the Premier League with the Cherries but whatever be the case, Liverpool are very concerned with the future of the player and are focusing entirely on him regaining his fitness. The Reds are also without much cover in the fullback region so it seems increasingly likely that despite interests, Joe Gomez is likely to remain with Liverpool and continue with his process of regaining full fitness while playing for the u-23 team and then making the odd appearance for the senior team in the cup competitions.
