Portsmouth were only able to get a draw against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, and now they must hope that Barnsley slips up in their final game against Bristol Rovers. The Pompey would square up against Peterborough, a side that still have an outside chance of making it to the sixth spot. So Kenny Jackett’s men can expect a fierce opposition at Fratton Park as both the teams are vying for promotion.
The Pompey have been in a terrific run of form in the past month, and they would be one of the favourites to win the playoffs if they don’t make it through the automatic promotion spots. Luton Town were expected to wrap up the title, but they have dropped five points in their last two games. Their position also looks vulnerable at the moment, so both the automatic spots are open with just a few games remaining in the season.
Portsmouth Predicted Lineup Vs Peterborough United
Formation (4-2-3-1)
Defence
Craig MacGillivray is expected to start in goal once again for the home side. English defender Matt Clarke is set to occupy the centre back position. Former Peterborough defender Christian Burgess should partner him.
Nathan Thompson has been influential down the right side of the defence as he has racked up seven assists in all competitions this season. He should once again reprise his role in a similar position. Lee Brown has been ever-present down the left side of the defence as he is close to making 50 appearances this season. He should start as the left back to complete the back four.
Midfield
Tom Naylor will start in the middle of the park, and his primary job would be to shield the back four. Ben Close will be his likely partner in midfield. He is expected to play in a more box to box role.
Jamal Lowe scored the equaliser against Sunderland at the weekend, and he is expected to start on the right once again. Ronan Curtis recently won Young Player of the Season for his side, and he should operate from the left. The two wide duos have been crucial to the Pompey in the attacking third, and their manager would once again pin his hopes on them. Brett Pitman should start in the no. 10 position behind the striker.
Attack
James Vaughan started the last game, and Jackett could go in with Oliver Hawkins as the man up front for this tie.
