According to the reports in France as cited by the Daily Record, Frech outfit Marseille are set to reignite their interest in Rangers’ star striker Alfredo Morelos. The Colombian was targeted by the French heavyweights even last season, and they had reportedly offered £5m for him at that time. It is expected that they would have to come up with a much better offer than that to seal the deal for the 29 goal man.
It is understood that Marseille’s director of football, Andoni Zubizarreta is eyeing Morelos as a replacement for Mario Balotelli. We will agree with Zubizarreta that he is on the right track if he wants to replace Balotelli with the Colombian as Morelos can match him with goals and antics.
Morelos’ impressive goalscoring record has been spoiled by five red cards he has seen this season. For a striker, those are abysmal numbers, and the player needs to improve on the discipline front if he wants to make it big in the footballing world.
The forward is currently suspended, and it is highly unlikely that he would play anymore this season given the form of Jermain Defoe. It is no surprise that Morelos is attracting interest from various clubs, and Rangers too might look to cash in on him in the summer.
However, his disciplinary record might have reduced the transfer fee Rangers might have received. At 22, the Colombian international has a huge ceiling for improvement, and he can be a devastating striker if he can get his act together.
What should Rangers do?
The Bears should be in a strong position to negotiate as the forward signed an improved deal not too long ago. It’s clear that it was done to detract potential clubs and push up his price in the transfer market. Rangers’ Managing Director Stewart Robertson compared him to Celtic’s Moussa Dembele who fetched £19.8m in the summer of 2018 from Lyon. Rangers too would like to sell the striker for a similar figure but the unfortunate end to the season might cost Rangers a few million.
As a human being, it is tough to avoid recency bias, and signing clubs would point out Morelos’ poor disciplinary record. We want to suggest that if Gerrard doesn’t get the right price from Marseille, then he should keep hold of Morelos for another year. The player too should be happy as he recently signed an improved deal and maybe his poor disciplinary record might come as a blessing in disguise for the Gers.
