Inconsistency seems to be the biggest problem that Everton have been struck with this season as they succumbed to another defeat in their last match against Fulham. The Cottagers completely outplayed the Toffees in every department and notched up a 2-0 victory as Marco Silva’s men missed a real finisher who can score goals.
It has been a real cause of concern for the Toffees that they don’t have a good enough striker in their lineup. This has reportedly seen the Merseyside club looking to invest in a new forward, and they seem to have found the right player in the form of David Neres.
The 22-year-old Brazilian forward, who is currently plying his trade for Ajax, has been in sensational form this season. According to the Sun, Everton are one of the clubs looking to make a move for the prolific striker next summer.
Besides being a prolific scorer for his side this season on the domestic front, the young forward has shown his mettle in Europe, ie, the UEFA Champions League. His goals against Real Madrid and Juventus have helped his side make dramatic comebacks in back to back matches, thus leading his team to the semifinal of the competition.
Everton have experienced nothing but disappointment in the attacking department this season, with both the strikers Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Cenk Tosun not being able to do any harm to the opposition defence. The wingers Bernard, Theo Walcott and Ademola Lookman (except for Richarlison) have looked completely ineffective this season as well. This is where someone like Neres could come into the fray for the Toffees.
Neres is known for his devastating pace and has a keen eye for goal. However, the fact that the player has no past experience of playing in the Premier League might be a detriment in the way of Everton signing the Ajax starlet.
With several big-name clubs already looking to add the player to their side, it would be difficult for the Eredivisie club to keep their star striker in the next term. However, he might have to sit on the bench for most of the season if the big clubs can lure him away.
At Everton, he would be the main man to lead the line with no one to compete with him. So if the Toffees can land him this summer, it would be a win-win situation for both the player and the club. Now it is to be seen whether the 22-year-old would be ready to give up the lure of playing in the Champions League and move to the Merseyside club to take up a new challenge in the Premier League.
