It’s time for the biggest game in Scottish football this weekend as we build up for the second Old Firm Derby this season. The two most successful clubs in Scottish football Celtic and Rangers will clash against each other in the semi-finals of the Scottish League Cup. The two Glasgow sides have already met each other once this season that was in the Premiership last month where Celtic came out 5-1 winners.
Will Rangers get to have a sweet revenge on their rivals by outing them from the League Cup and making it to the final or once again, the Blue half of Glasgow will be dominated by the green half? We will get the answer on Sunday. Mark Warburton will demand much better showing from his boys this time out and these are the three Rangers players on whom he will have high expectation.
Andy Halliday
When Rangers brought in players like Barton, Rossiter, Kranjcar, Crooks and Windass this summer to bolster their midfield ranks, it looked like Andy Halliday won’t have too much time on the pitch this season. The Scotsman started this season as just a backup to high profile players like Barton and Rossiter but has slowly established himself as a key player for the Gers. The 25-year-old has been brilliant at the base of Rangers midfield of late with his tenacity and industry as well as a solid defensive ability. The hard working midfielder will have a big say on the outcome of the game.
Rob Kiernan
Celtic have not had too many problems in scoring goals so far this season while Rangers have struggled to keep their opponents away from scoring. Celtic attack vs Rangers defence- it does not even look like a contest on paper. Rob Kiernan has to buckle up in order to keep out Celtic from scoring. We expect Warburton going with Kiernan and Wilson at the back. They both possess the pace to deal with either Griffiths or Dembele, whoever plays up front.
Martyn Waghorn
Rangers’ best striker has looked off-colour since the start of the season. Even though he is struggling to make an impact from the right flank, Warburton keeps playing him as a wide forward. The Englishman has just one goal to his name this season, whereas he has been to the physio room for some time. The 26-year-old will be a player to watch out for in the big game and we have to wait and see if he can come out as a winner.
