According to the latest reports from Spanish media outlet El Confidential, Tottenham Hotspur’s Christian Eriksen has emerged as a top transfer target for Real Madrid. It is believed that Florentino Perez prefers the Danish midfielder over someone like Paul Pogba who has also been linked with the Galacticos in recent time.
Eriksen is one of the few outright playmakers in the Premier League, and he has been crucial to Pochettino’s side for quite a few years now. The Ajax youth product is going to enter the final year of his contract soon, and Spurs haven’t been able to tie him down to a new deal.
Real Madrid are on course to end up trophyless for the first time since 2013. Therefore we can expect them to do some major surgery to their squad in the upcoming transfer window. It is no surprise that after his 6 impressive years at the North London club, Eriksen is being linked with a club of Real Madrid’s stature.
Why he will be a big loss for Spurs?
The Danish midfielder is able to unlock defences with his in point passing. Apart from that, he is willing to work hard and press from the top as well. A proper no. 10 is often rare to find, and that is why someone like Eriksen is so special.
The contract standoff between the player and the club suggests that Eriksen is looking for a big move next. Spurs have come close to winning trophies in the past few years, but they have still fallen short of their mark. Maybe the player feels that at 27, he has every right to move to a club where he can get his hands on some big titles.
Chances of Spurs keeping hold of him?
It is often tough to ignore when a club like Real Madrid comes calling. Spurs though are in with a good shout to move to the Champions League semi-finals this season after their first-leg win over Manchester City. Maybe if Tottenham goes on to win the top European competition, Eriksen might change his mind. But that’s a big maybe, and Madrid would be the favourites to land him if they are keen on him. Given the situation the Spanish heavyweights face, they would love to have a creative spark like Eriksen in their ranks.
The best Spurs could do in that case is to demand a sizeable fee so that they can look for his replacements. Or maybe they can have their former player Gareth Bale included in the deal with him returning to London.
