According to a recent report by the Express, Liverpool are prepared to offer Divock Origi a new contract after the striker enjoyed a successful run of games under Jurgen Klopp this season. The same source has revealed that the Belgian forward’s current deal at Anfield expires in the summer of 2020, but the Reds are now willing to hand him an extension following his impressive displays as an impact substitute in recent matches.
Origi’s Remarkable Turnaround At Anfield
The Oostende born talent initially found it difficult to cut the mustard at the Merseyside club and had to go out on loan to LOSC Lille and VfL Wolfsburg respectively to secure more game time on the pitch. However, Klopp decided to retain his services for this campaign, and things have worked out for both parties so far.
Origi became an Anfield hero overnight after scoring a last-gasp winner against Everton in front of the Kop End earlier this season. The Belgian has made a total of 14 appearances for the Reds this term, scoring four goals while grabbing two assists in all competitions.
The former KRC Genk starlet is also vastly experienced at the international level having represented Belgium in 26 matches and scoring three goals for them thus far.
What Does The Belgian Forward Offer On The Pitch?
Origi has decent pace and can make some well-timed runs behind the opposition half. Although, the Belgian striker needs to improve on his finishing, yet he packs a lot of power with his shots on goal. He has excelled in the role of an impact substitute under Klopp, so it is no surprise to hear about Liverpool’s desire to tie him up on a new deal.
As long as Klopp is only planning to use him as a squad player, Origi should be a low-risk gamble as he has often shown this season that he can make a positive impact off the bench. However, Liverpool should in no way think about handing him a regular starting berth at Anfield as the Belgian is not good enough to regularly feature in the Premier League.
The Right Call By Klopp?
Klopp might be playing smart in acquiring Origi’s services for the long-run as it would be quite tricky for the Reds to recruit someone only as a sporadic option as most players would want to ensure regular game time on the pitch. However, Origi is a forward who might not complain too much about being a bit part player especially if it leads to success in terms of silverware at the end of this campaign.
