According to the latest reports from the Corriere Dello Sport, West Ham United are keeping tabs on AS Roma’s striker Edin Dzeko since January. The report adds that the Hammers are willing to pay €15m for him in the upcoming summer. However, it’s not going to be that straightforward for the East London club as Inter Milan are also keen on him. It is believed that Dzeko is expected to leave the Italian capital Roma in the summer.
West Ham are currently 11th on the table, and they were expected to fight for the Europa League spot after they made some tremendous inroads in the summer transfer market. Things didn’t exactly go to plan, but Pellegrini is slowly improving the team.
Why West Ham needs a striker?
Marko Arnautovic has kept the Hammers hanging as he came close to leaving the club in January. Another transfer saga for the Austrian can ensue in the next few months. Pellegrini would be better off getting rid of a player who isn’t committed to the club in the long term.
Andy Carroll is also in the final few months of his contract and given his injury trouble and age; the club would be better off not giving him a new deal. Therefore West ham are expected to go after a striker in the summer.
What will Dzeko bring to the table
Edin Dzeko never really got his due when he was with Manchester City earlier. There cannot be any denying that he was an effective target man. His record in the Premier League was impressive as he managed 50 goals and 24 assists in 130 appearances. Most of the time he was playing second fiddle to Sergio Aguero, so those numbers are even more impressive if one looks from that light. His hold up play, finishing and his ability to get his team-mates into play will make him a top-class addition to the Hammers’ squad.
Chances of West Ham signing him
Edin Dzeko has already worked under Pellegrini before so he will know what he will be getting himself into if he signs for the Hammers. However, Inter Milan are currently placed third in Serie A, and they are now the favourites to secure the Champions League spot.
That can dent West Ham’s chances as Dzeko might feel he is at a stage of his career where he would want to play football at the top level. But with Mauro Icardi at the club, Dzeko might not be guaranteed regular playing minutes. So that might work in favour of the English club. Therefore at the moment, we feel that it’s 50-50 and it can go either way.
