Relegation is often hard on the managers, players, club and even the backroom staff. The TV deal where the Premier League allows all clubs to generate a certain amount of money every time their matches are shown live is a particular moneymaker. But things can quickly change for relegated clubs. They often need to cut cost, and as a result, they end up selling some of their best players.
Liverpool last season managed to sign Xherdan Shaqiri from Stoke City on a bargain deal of £13m. After the recent round of Premier League fixtures, Fulham and Huddersfield Town are destined to go down, and Leeds United can look at their players to bolster their squad.
The Whites have their destiny in their own hands as they currently sit on the second spot in the Championship with the club vying to move to the English top flight by next season. With the promotion, the club can receive a windfall in terms of money and a lot of it should be used in building up the team for the upcoming campaign.
Here are two players Bielsa can target from Fulham and Huddersfield.
André Schürrle
The World Cup winner was signed by the Cottagers with a lot of gung-ho, but even he couldn’t help them get out of their sorry situation. The German still managed six goals this campaign which makes him their second highest scorer for the season behind Aleksandar Mitrovic.
Leeds United will lose Jack Harrison to Manchester City as his loan spell will expire. Ezgjan Alioski looks more suited to play as a fullback, and that would leave the club with only Jack Clarke as an outright left winger. The Whites need to add depth in the left wing spot, and Schurrle can be a decent addition in that position. He can even be used in other areas across the final third, and his versatility will be a significant asset for Bielsa.
Aaron Mooy
Leed United have been quite lucky that Mateusz Klich didn’t suffer any major injuries throughout the season. United currently have just two plausible central midfield options in the form of Klich and Adam Forshaw. Aaron Mooy is an experienced operator, and the Australian can fill in various roles in midfield.
Mooy has a decent passing range and is willing to work hard off the ball as well. The midfielder was a crucial player for the Terriers last season as he managed four goals and four assists which helped them to defy the odds by staying in the Premier League. The 28-year-old has shown that he can handle himself at the top level and he would be a shrewd signing in the summer for Bielsa.
