According to the latest reports from Daily Star, Leeds United have drawn up a list of possible transfer targets for the summer, and one thing on their agenda is to replace Samuel Saiz. The Spanish playmaker is currently on loan with Getafe, and the club will look to sell him permanently in the summer. The Whites are reportedly eyeing a deal for Wigan Athletic’s playmaker Nick Powell.
Now we don’t want to brag here (but we are going to anyway), we had carried out a report around three weeks back on how Leeds United should look to target Nick Powell given his contract situation at the DW Stadium.
The Whites were linked (Birmingham Mail) with Powell in the summer of 2018 as well. It now seems like Bielsa has listened to us and he is set to target the English playmaker in the summer.
Powell shot into limelight when he earned a move to Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson went on to back the then 19-year-old midfielder to replace Paul Scholes. Ferguson had said (The Independent), ”Nick Powell is going to be a really good player, He has a great temperament, is two-footed and quick. He is a good physical specimen and has terrific vision. We hope Powell fills Paul Scholes’ boots.”
Obviously, things didn’t turn out the way both the parties wanted it to at the end. Powell struggled for game time at Old Trafford and was sent on various loan spells. He found his level at Wigan Athletic as the Latics decided to sign him permanently in 2016. The playmaker played a massive role in bringing Wigan back to the Championship as he managed 15 goals and seven assists as an attacking midfielder last season.
This season, Powell started off well but has gone off the boil a bit. The uncertainty regarding his future and the contract situation hasn’t helped his cause, but we feel that he will be able to create an impact for Leeds United. With the Whites back in pole position to move to the Premier League, the playmaker might fancy another chance to play in the Premier League and prove his worth.
Powell is an intelligent operator, and technically, the Englishman is exceptionally sound. He has that physical presence to even start as a striker when required and maybe someone like Bielsa can bring the best out of him. The 25-year-old’s movement in the final third and his ability to find his team-mates should come in handy at Elland Road. The Whites should go after this attacking midfielder to solve their creative problems.
