It was another disappointing outing for Tottenham Hotspur against Liverpool at Anfield as Spurs were beaten by 2-1 in a humdinger of a contest. The Reds came out all guns blazing against their opponents and took the lead in the 16th minute of the match as Andrew Robertson delivered a brilliant ball into the box for Firmino, who found the back of the net with a thumping header.
Tottenham, however, started to put pressure on the Liverpool defence with their counter-attacking display in the second half and got their reward in the 70th minute as Lucas Moura turned in Christian Eriksen’s assist from close range to get his side back in the contest.
It was absolute mayhem right at the end of the match as Hugo Lloris could not hold onto a header from Mohamed Salah and parried it onto the foot of Toby Alderweireld. The ball came off his foot and trickled over the line to complete a memorable victory for the Reds, which gets them back to the top of the league table, topping Manchester City by two points.
Here is how the Tottenham Hotspur players were rated from their defeat against Liverpool.
Hugo Lloris: 5
A night he would want to forget quickly. Was not in any position to prevent Firmino from taking a free header to open the scoring. For the second goal, he should have held onto the ball rather than pushing it onto Alderweireld’s feet.
Davinson Sanchez: 6
Looked out of sorts in the first half against Sadio Mane. Did well to restrict the Liverpool attackers from taking shots on the goal.
Jan Vertonghen: 6
Tried his best to keep Firmino quiet but could not do so as the Brazilian got the better of him to score the first goal. Kept his composure in the second half and kept the opposition attackers at bay.
Toby Alderweireld: 6
Ended the match with an unfortunate own goal to mar a decent display. Kept getting into tussles with Salah and Mane throughout the game and won most of the battles. However, Lloris was more to blame for his goal.
Moussa Sissoko: 6
Put a solid shift in the second half after having a poor first half. Could have been the saviour for his side with a superb goal but blasted the ball over the bar.
Danny Rose: 7
Got into position very quickly with the ball as he went into the attack on the left wing. Delivered some decent balls into the danger area with his accurate crossing.
Dele Alli: 5
Not a night to remember for him. Gave away the ball quite a few times in midfield and could not win it back. Was inaccurate with his passing as well.
Christian Eriksen: 7
Looked in absolutely ominous touch throughout the match. His passing was accurate and he set up Lucas in front of the goal in the 70th minute to get his side back into the contest. Should have scored one himself but for a fine defensive effort from Robertson.
Kieran Trippier: 6
Got a few balls into the danger area with his crossing. However, looked ineffective most of the times while backtracking.
Lucas Moura: 7
Great finish to bring his side back into the match. Got into good positions and opened up the opposition defence with his classy footwork on a number of occasions as well.
Harry Kane: 6
The forward has actually been in pretty good goalscoring record for club and country recently. However, his cross from midfield was good enough to initiate the attack that led to the equalising goal.
Substitutes
Heung-Min Son: 6
Got very few opportunities to turn the tide in his side’s favour.
Ben Davies: NA
Played too little to warrant a rating.
Fernando Llorente: NA
Played too little to warrant a rating.
