Tottenham Hotspur were challenging Manchester City and Liverpool for the Premier League title for the most parts of the season, but it is clear now that they are fighting to remain in the top 4. Spurs haven’t made any signings in the last two transfer windows and reports from TalkSport suggest that the North London club would sign a player in the upcoming summer.
The report adds that Spurs have scouted seven players and one of them is Celtic’s star fullback, Kieran Tierney. The defender is even linked with a move to Arsenal and is being valued at £25m. Spurs have been financially tied down due to the escalating cost of their new stadium, but one can now expect Pochettino to go after some players in the summer.
Tierney is an absolute superstar of the game in Scotland, and he is quite simply the best fullback in the Scottish Premiership. At just 21, he has already played significant roles in Celtic’s title runs. This is not the first time that Premier League clubs want the fullback as the defender has attracted plenty of interest over the past year.
The Scottish international is a typical modern-day attack-minded fullback but what makes him stand out is his desire and commitment. He isn’t shy about going into 50-50 challenges, and defensively too, he works extremely hard. Being a boyhood Celtic fan, he is an absolute darling among the fans right now. It would be interesting to see whether Tierney would decide to leave in the summer.
There is no doubt in our mind that Tierney can thrive even in the Premier League and it is no surprise that some of the heavyweight clubs are after him. Danny Rose’s future has been uncertain at the Whites Hart Lane for quite some time now, and there is a major doubt whether the fullback will stick with Spurs after the end of this season.
Tottenham also have someone like Ben Davies at their disposal who can do a decent job as a left back. Therefore, if Rose stays put at the North London club, then there is no need for Spurs to go after a full back like Tierney. Arsenal are currently in a tight race with Manchester United and Chelsea for the top four, and it can go either way at the moment.
If the Gunners miss out on playing in the Champions League, then Spurs (if they make it to the Champions League) should have an advantage over their derby rivals in attracting someone like Tierney.
