15-year -old prospect, Morten Spencer who was wanted (The Sun) by Manchester City last month has signed for Leeds United as confirmed by the youngster himself on his Instagram and Twitter account.
The attacking midfielder had come up from Sunderland’s academy and reports from the Sun last month suggested that the reigning Premier League champions were ready to pay £200,000 as compensation to bring him to the Etihad.
However, it seems like, in a turn of events, Leeds United have managed to sign this English playmaker. The 15-year-old was delighted to sign his first professional contract for the Whites. He captioned his post on Instagram with, ”Absolutely delighted to have signed my first contract at Leeds United. Thank you to everyone who has helped me along the way. Hard work starts now.”
The Whites are currently battling to move to the English top flight as they sit on the third spot, just one point behind second-placed Sheffield United. Marcelo Bielsa has shown enough trust in the youngsters this season with injury misfortune hitting the United squad on various occasions. Instead of panicking and going into the transfer market and making new signings, the manager decided to promote youngsters, and the results have paid off well.
The likes of Tyler Roberts, Jack Clarke and Jamie Shackleton have shown impressive signs and other players like Aapo Halme, William Huffer, Leif Davis have gotten valuable first-team experience this season under Bielsa. Elland Road is one of the brightest prospects to join for any youngster right now, and one can understand why Spencer overlooked Manchester City to join the West Yorkshire outfit.
Spencer is likely to start for the youth team right now, but he seems to be a proper talent. He can easily be drafted at a higher level within 2-3 years. He has already made appearances for England’s u-15 side, and there is no doubt that he will start developing into a future star.
Manchester City have found attracting and holding on to their young talents hard, given the superstars they have in their squad. One of their biggest miss in recent times have been letting go of Jadon Sancho who seems like a top talent at the moment. The Citizens would hope that missing out on Spencer doesn’t come back to bite them as well. On the other hand, the Whites would hope that Spencer can turn out to a major player in a few years time.
