Leeds United might be sitting in the third spot right now, but they have managed to surprise quite a few pundits and fans by vying for the direct promotion spots. The magic of Marcelo Bielsa has definitely worked big time but the credit also needs to go to the players as they have adapted well under the new manager.
One such player who has looked completely transformed under the Argentine manager is Kalvin Phillips. The midfielder has played the deepest role in midfield to perfection this season, and his influence in the team has been quite a major one.
Often when Phillips plays well, the Whites play well as well as the midfielder orchestrates the game from deep areas and also protects the back four when required. However, his major influence has been in building up play as United enjoy plenty of possession.
After a season like this, there is bound to be significant interest in the player in the summer. Even though the midfielder has his contract at Elland Road until 2021, United would definitely have to renew Phillips’ contract and get him on a better wage. His unique playing style would suit quite a few of the Premier League sides, but Phillips’ agent recently gave a big update which should warm every United fan’s heart. Kevin Sharp recently replied in this fashion when a fan asked him to make Phillips a one-club man.

In today’s day and age, an agent plays a massive role in deciding the payer’s future. After a season like that Phillips could easily get a big money move to a Premier League club. However, it’s clear that Sharp wants Phillips to stick with Leeds United and that is quite refreshing to see as agents often push their players to move to bigger clubs.
Leeds United though need to get to the Premier League to keep hold of the likes of Phillips, Kemar Roofe and Jack Clarke as all these players can thrive in the Premier League with other top tier clubs. Therefore if the Whites fail to clinch promotion, one couldn’t blame the players much for looking for better opportunities.
Marcelo Bielsa’s future is also going to be in doubt if the West Yorkshire outfit fails to move to the Premier League, so the Whites are in a situation where it’s all or nothing for them. Hopefully, they secure a move to the English top flight and manage to hold on to their key players like Phillips. In turn, the midfielder can go on to become a modern day legend at the club.
