According to a recent report by Catalan news outlet Sport, Liverpool left-back Alberto Moreno will pen a two-year contract with Barcelona when his contract at Anfield expires at the end of this campaign. The same source has also claimed that the Spanish defender is one of Ernesto Valverde’s three transfer targets for the summer which also includes Ajax’s Matthijs de Ligt and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Luka Jovic.
Moreno will become a free agent in the summer after failing to establish himself in Jurgen Klopp’s starting XI this season. The Liverpool outcast has been unable to live up to the high expectations which came with his arrival from Sevilla in the summer of 2014.
The 26-year-old has been a sporadic option under Jurgen Klopp over the past couple of year due to the remarkable rise of Andrew Robertson. The Spanish defender has also suffered a bad run with injuries which has not helped his cause at the Merseyside club. Hence, a move to the Nou Camp could enable him to resurrect his career away from the physicality and high intensity of Premier League football.
The Spanish talent has made a fair share of high-profile mistakes during his Liverpool career which has cost the Reds dearly in terms of winning trophies. His most notable error came in the 2016 UEFA Europa League final when he had a dreadful second half for Liverpool which handed the prestigious European cup to his former employers Sevilla.
The Spanish full-back is not a favourite amongst the Liverpool supporters, so there is no reason for the Merseyside club to keep him beyond this summer. The Sevilla born talent has featured in just five matches for the Reds this term and has hardly impressed during his time on the pitch.
It’s high time that Klopp let him go as he is not even a good squad rotation option at Anfield anymore. Moreno is a questionable act in defence, but he can be decent with his creativity in the attacking end of the pitch. Hence, a move to a club like Barca could help him as he will be able to play as an understudy to Jordi Alba. Furthermore, the La Liga giants love to use their full-backs as attacking outlets so Moreno’s lack of defensive awareness might not get exposed often at the Nou Camp.
All in all, a move back to his homeland might suit Moreno’s playing style while Klopp can concentrate on bringing in a suitable replacement who can come in and give Robertson a run for his money for a spot in the Liverpool starting XI. Thus, the Spaniard’s exit from Anfield will benefit all parties involved.
