Manchester City are currently on a roll in every competition they have played this season so far. The Citizens have displayed brilliant composure on the pitch, with every player in the side contributing to their fullest. However, Pep Guardiola seems to be adding to the strength of his team and is thus looking to include a few new players to his squad in the next summer transfer window.
According to Manchester Evening News, the reigning Premier League champions are looking to make a move for Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar in the next summer transfer window. The player is one of the most highly rated centre backs in Europe and has attracted the attention of a number of big-name clubs with his stellar performances in the Inter backline.
Manchester City already have some quality defenders in their lineup who have served them well since their arrival at the club. This season, however, their defence has looked shaky on a number of occasions. This seems to have affected the confidence of Guardiola on his existing crop of defenders as he might look to get Skriniar into his squad.
The 24-year-old Slovakian defender has made a name for himself as a cool and composed customer in the backline for both his club and country. His ability to take on even the best of strikers and dispossess them with perfectly timed tackles and interceptions have helped him to earn rave reviews from a number of experts from all over Europe.
Manchester City, on the other hand, have been in dire straits on occasions this season due to the incompetence of their defenders. The latest example of such an incident was the setback that they had to face in the quarter-final of the FA Cup against Swansea City. The Championship side took advantage of their defensive lapses and scored twice in the first half to take a lead of 2-0 as the likes of Nicolas Otamendi and Aymeric Laporte looked on.
The Citizens might also lose one of their longest serving players in the form of Vincent Kompany, who is in the final year of his contract at the Etihad Stadium. It is looking increasingly unlikely that the defending Premier League champions would be interested in extending his stay. So, there might be a chance for Skriniar to come into the side and ply his trade on a regular basis.
Guardiola would be well aware of the fact that the addition of a player like Skriniar would help the City defence eradicate its vulnerabilities to a great extent. Though the player has no prior experience of plying his trade in the Premier League, his performances in the Serie A might be convincing enough for the Citizens to splash the cash and bring the Slovakian ace to the Etihad to add to their defensive strength for the future.
