According to a recent report by the Independent, Liverpool left-back Alberto Moreno is closing in on a switch to Lazio when his contract at Anfield runs out at the end of this campaign. The same source has revealed that the Spanish defender has accepted that he has no future with the Reds and will be free to move to a club of his choosing with the Serie A outfit his most likely destination at the moment.
The 26-year-old has been a sporadic feature for Jurgen Klopp’s side over the past couple of seasons due to the remarkable form of Andrew Robertson. The Spanish defender has also been ravaged by injuries which have not helped his cause at Anfield. Hence, a change in scenery could enable him to resurrect his career away from England, where he has been underwhelming.
Moreno joined the Merseyside club from Sevilla in the summer of 2014, but he has failed to impress during his time with the club thus far. The Spaniard has been guilty of making a string of high-profile errors during his Liverpool career which has cost the club dearly in terms of winning silverware.
His most notable mistake came in the 2016 UEFA Europa League final when he had a shocking second half for the Reds which handed his former club Sevilla the prestigious European trophy.
The Reds defensive ace is clearly not a favourite among the club’s fans so there is no reason why Klopp should consider keeping him at the club beyond this season. The Spanish left-back has just made five appearances for Liverpool this term but has not been impressive at all during his time on the pitch.
It’s high time that Klopp got rid of him as he is not adding any value while playing a bit part role at Anfield. The departure of the Spaniard won’t affect the Liverpool first-team at all, but his acquisition might benefit a club like Lazio.
Moreover, the Serie A might suit Moreno’s playing style while the Reds can concentrate on bringing in a suitable replacement who will be capable enough of challenging Robertson for a spot in Klopp’s starting XI. Hence, it will be a move that will benefit all parties involved.
