Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd who currently plies his trade for Kilmarnock launched a scathing attack on Rangers’ Director Of Football Mark Allen for his dubious transfer activities. Allen has overseen quite a few players coming in since Steven Gerrard took over and it is fair to say that quite a few of them have turned out to be dud signings.
Eros Grezda and Borna Barisic might still come good in the future, but they have failed to live up to expectations this season. Umar Sadiq, Lassana Coulibaly and Ovie Ejaria turned out to be major disappointments, and Gareth McAuley has been out of action for quite some time now. So there have been a few questionable acquisitions.
Recently Rangers were said to be close to signing (The Scottish Sun) Motherwell’s talented winger Jake Hastie. Boyd though slammed Allen for signing too many similar players and said, ”Mark Allen is quick enough to jump around changing rooms when the team wins, but what has he actually contributed? He paints himself as the mastermind in everything that’s good when Rangers are winning, but he doesn’t fool me.”
“For a start, why are there four left-wingers at the club in Glenn Middleton, Ryan Kent, Jamie Murphy and Eros Grezda? Jordan Jones is another one on the way with Jake Hastie expected to follow. That just doesn’t make any sense to me.”
Boyd does have some argument here as the names he has taken are all predominantly left wingers. However, he has mistakenly called Grezda as a left winger where in fact, he has played most part of his career on the right flank.
The Albanian international is versatile enough to play on either of the flanks so one cannot call him a left winger. To go with that, Ryan Kent is just on loan, and we are not yet sure whether Rangers would be able to sign him permanently in the summer.
Grezda was anyway a late addition to Ibrox in the summer of 2018 as the Gers had lost Jamie Murphy for the rest of the season due to injury a week earlier. We believe Gerrard and Allen wouldn’t have gone after Grezda if Murphy would have been available for selection.
It’s true that deciding to go for Jake Hastie might have raised a few eyebrows especially when the club had secured the signature of Jordan Jones. But Hastie could turn out to be a huge talent, and we are definitely in favour of Rangers going in for him. Rangers have made some mistakes in the transfer market, and the fans too might be disappointed with some signings. However, signing Jones on a free transfer and then going after Hastie who could be once in a generation talent isn’t a bad ploy from the Bears. Boyd is being harsh on his former team. Sour grapes maybe?
