According to a recent report by the Daily Star, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen used to dream of playing for Real Madrid as a child and the La Liga heavyweights are currently interested in securing his services at the end of this campaign. However, the same source has also claimed that Spurs are willing to demand a world-record fee of £200m for the Danish international if Madrid wants to acquire him in the summer.
The fact that Los Blancos is Eriksen’s dream club doesn’t bode well for the North London outfit even though they are trying to do everything they can to keep hold of their prized asset. We have seen in the past that any star player who had his heart set on a move usually ends up getting his way.
It was once again the case when Phillipe Coutinho orchestrated a big-money switch out of Liverpool to join his ‘dream’ club, Barcelona at the start of 2018.
Hence, there is no doubt that Eriksen’s desire to move to the Spanish capital will be a bitter pill to swallow for Mauricio Pochettino’s side as they look to finish the season strong by clinching a top 4 spot at the very least at the end of this campaign.
Eriksen has been one of Pochettino’s most important assets on the pitch since the Argentine manager took charge of the club back in 2014. The Danish playmaker has been a consistent performer for Spurs, so it is safe to say that the midfielder’s time in the Premier League has been a grand success. However, he is yet to win any major trophies under Pochettino since his high-profile move from Ajax in the summer of 2013.
Hence, it is no surprise that he has not penned a new deal with the North London club so far. A player of Eriksen’s stature needs to win trophies every season so Madrid could be an ideal destination for him. As for Spurs, it will a massive blow to lose the Danish international next summer, but they need to explore the possibility of selling him to the highest bidder this summer or else risk losing him for free when his contract runs out at the end of next season.
Even though Spurs’ demands seem to be inflated at the moment, we can expect them to sell for a big fee nonetheless, if they do decide to cash in on him ahead of the new campaign.
