According to a recent report by El Confidencial (via talkSPORT), Real Madrid are set to demand £70m for their Colombian midfielder, James Rodriguez, who is currently playing on loan at Bayern Munich.
The same source has revealed that Bayern could take up the option to sign him permanently for £50m next summer, but if they choose not to activate that clause, then the Galacticos would demand even more money from other interested parties to boost Zinedine Zidane’s transfer kitty for the summer window.
Manchester United are set to battle it out with Liverpool in pursuit of the £70m-rated Madrid flop. It is no secret that the Red Devils need to recruit well next summer so that they can bridge the gap to Liverpool and Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.
Ole Gunnar Solkjaer’s men have lacked a creative spark in midfield in recent matches as Paul Pogba has had a dip in form. Hence, a player of Rodriguez’s quality could help them in the future if the Mancunian outfit can find a way to get the best out of his talents.
The Colombian international’s performances have been underwhelming, to say the least, during this campaign. Hence, Bayern have shown no indication that they want to take up the option to sign him permanently once his loan deal expires at the end of this campaign. However, this could pave the way for Ed Woodward and co. to seal a move for the South American sensation.
The 27-year-old is blessed with a terrific left-foot and packs a lot of power with his shots. He is also a very productive dribbler with the ball and knows how to unlock a rigid defence when his team needs him the most. However, the lack of consistency and a poor run with injuries has hampered his career thus far.
The Colombian prospect looks like a shell of his former self so a move to Old Trafford might suit him as it will give him a platform to prove his worth at the highest level once again. However, it will be a huge risk for United to sign him for £70m as he might turn out to be another ‘Angel Di Maria’ for them.
Hence, the Red Devils might be better of opting for a more safe and proven option if they do decide to splash the cash next summer.
