Steven Gerrard was relishing his managerial stint at Ibrox following some early success. However, the story has not been quite the same in recent months, and the gaffer might now face the sack (although still unlikely) unless Rangers finish the season on a high note. The Jekyll and Hyde form is thoroughly frustrating – particularly when they managed to seal a victory against the mighty Celtic after years of humiliation. But, at the same time, the Gers were humbled by Aberdeen twice as they were knocked out from both the domestic cup competitions.
Gerrard, understandably, is unhappy with his team’s performance and has demanded more quality in the squad despite sanctioning a string of new signings during both the transfer windows. Although he must take the blame for failing to turn things around, the former Liverpool midfield great is self-critical and also aware of the uncertainty over his future.
“If I don’t win the next three or four things that are available, maybe I won’t be here. I’m aware of that. But I’ve taken over a team and a club that’s been going through a lot of pain, that’s been quite toxic. It needs a lot of change on and off the pitch and we’ve done everything we can to try to improve things.”
Stated Gerrard (as cited by the Express) who is focused on his work and has vowed to script an upsurge if allowed a ‘bit more time’. His passion for the game is unparalleled, but he is also someone who is learning on the job and needs the experience to overcome the current crisis.
There might be opinions on whether Gerrard should be retained in the next term. However, the upcoming fixture against Celtic is absolutely titanic in shaping up his Ibrox future. The game at the Parkhead would be challenging, but the Hoops are also in a transition under new chief Neil Lennon. A result against them would uplift the spirit once again before the closure of the campaign.
Since their return to the top flight, Rangers have hired and fired managers in a frequent manner. It is to be seen now whether the management pursue a similar approach or be patient and offer the gaffer a chance to learn from his mistakes.
Gerrard, nevertheless, has shown moments of excellence with his strategy, philosophy and gameplan but needs to regroup his men, regain the rhythm and show some consistency to reclaim the Scottish crown.
