According to the latest reports from TalkSport, Borussia Dortmund have entered the race to sign Celtic’s fullback Kieran Tierney. The German side are weighing up a £25m move for the left-back in the summer. With every passing day, a new team seems to be joining the race for the defender as earlier it was reported that Leicester City and Arsenal wants to sign him.
This level of interest is a testament to Tierney’s talent and his ability as a footballer. There is no doubt that he would continue to garner interest from now until the summer transfer window and some more clubs could end up joining the race to sign him.
Dortmund are currently level on points with Bayern Munich and are fighting to clinch the Bundesliga title. If they become the German champions, then someone like Tierney could be tempted to join them in the summer. The report adds that Dortmund have been keeping track of the defender for months and Tierney caught their eye when scouts were watching loanee Jeremy Toljan in action.
Tierney has all the abilities that a top left back needs, and he can be classified as one of the best if not the best player in the Scottish Premiership. At just 21, he has already captained the side on numerous occasions when Scott Brown has been unavailable, and that goes to show how much he is valued at Celtic.
But it’s clear that the defender would reach a ceiling at Parkhead and he probably needs to look for a move to be counted as among the best in the world. With Tierney being a former ballboy and a boyhood Celtic fan, the decision is going to be a tough one for him. But a move away from Celtic seems inevitable to us.
What makes the defender stand out is his perseverance and defensive qualities. Modern-day fullbacks are almost like wingers, and they are generally quite strong while going forward. Tierney also falls in that category but what makes him unique is that he can defend exceptionally as well. His commitment and desire to go for 50-50 balls as well as his ability to carry the ball forward from defence should make him a hit at almost any of the clubs around the globe.
At such a young age the Scotsman has played a huge role in winning 4 Premiership titles, and a fifth one also looks very much on the cards now. The left-back has his contract until 2023, but with clubs like Dortmund joining the race to sign him, Tierney’s days look numbered at Celtic Park.
