Scott Sinclair is having a fantastic season at Parkhead as the English winger has already scored 17 goals and provided six assists in all competitions. The 29-year-old started the season off slow but has been in great form in the past two-three months where he has often been the difference maker for his side in the final third.
However, one thing which must be concerning the Celtic fans and the board must be the player’s contract situation. Reports from the Scottish Sun earlier came out this month that the winger is still awaiting a word from club’s chief Peter Lawwell regarding the triggering of a year-long extension. At the moment, Sinclair is in the final few months of his contract, but Celtic does have an option to extend it for a year.
There is no doubt that Celtic are going to trigger extension. But given his current form, the English winger should be on a new contract. It is never advisable to let a crucial player like him enter the final year of his contract as then the player might think about playing out his contract and depart the club for free in the future (Case in point Dedryck Boyata situation).
Therefore it’s absolutely appalling that there is yet no confirmation about the year-long extension and the player has to wait for the word from the board regarding his situation at Parkhead after a season where he has already played 45 games for them.
Sinclair could turn out to be a very crucial player for the Hoops in the next few seasons as the likes of James Forrest and Callum Mcgregor are attracting interest from the English top flight. Therefore the club needs to keep hold of some of its key players, and there is no doubt that Sinclair deserves a new contract after his recent performances.
The left winger often drifts inside and come to central areas to affect play and that has resulted in him scoring freely after the winter break. The former Aston Villa player might cut a frustrating figure on occasions as his final product is sometimes lacking, but he suits the Celtic style well. His pace and directness often make the difference on the left flank.
Celtic are playing with fire here and they might be making a big mistake if they continue with their lackadaisical approach in terms of giving a contract to their key players.
