According to the latest reports from the Express, Borussia Dortmund are interested in signing Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos in the summer. The forward himself has made it clear that he could leave in the upcoming summer and there is no doubt that Rangers too would be willing to ship their prized asset if the price is right.
Morelos had earlier claimed that playing in the Premier League is his dream, but there is no doubt that a move to Dortmund might attract the Colombian forward. Reports from the Express adds that Ibrox chiefs are looking for a price somewhere in the region of £20m as not too long ago Celtic had sold Moussa Dembele for such price at Lyon.
We believe that to be a fair price for Morelos, but they could look to earn more and probably demand somewhere closer to the £40m mark. Now before you think it’s absurd, we would like to back it with some stats.
In the 17-18 season, Dembele managed 16 goals to go with his nine assists for Celtic in 39 appearances. Moreover, there is no doubt that Dembele was playing in a superior team with better players around him. Therefore he was more likely to end up in goal scoring situations or positions.
On the other hand, Morelos has carried this Rangers team single-handedly on occasions. The striker has already played a whopping 40 games so far, and that also showcases how supremely fit he is currently. The physicality of the Scottish league and the way Morelos is kicked and harassed is a testament to his athletic prowess.
Coming to his goal scoring stats, the forward has already managed 28 goals this season to go with 11 assists. We have seen how Rangers have struggled without Morelos, and the importance of Rangers to Morelos is more than what Celtic had for Dembele. Therefore on these factors, £40m should be the price which Rangers should quote first.
Obviously, with a bit of negotiation, the price is going to come down. Now, what goes against Morelos is his temperament and his hot-headed nature. It’s true that the forward needs to mature and Dortmund might think of him as some sort of a gamble. There are going to be occasions when he is going to be suspended and miss out on games, but the most critical factor is that he will continue to give goals. As a manager, that is what you want from your striker.
