Things have gone horribly wrong for West Ham thus far this season. Big things were expected of the Hammers in the current campaign after the season they had last time out but in reality, it has been a big letdown. The East London club failed to make it to the group stage of the Europa League and after eight gameweeks in the Premier League, they just have two wins to their name. Bilic spent quite a fortune this summer to bring in a host of quality players like Ayew, Tore, Feghouli, Nordtveit and many more but West Ham’s start of the season has been very underwhelming.
In such a tricky situation at the London Stadium, Slaven Bilic is reportedly considering a move for Besiktas winger Kerim Frei, according to Mirror Sport. Usually, the solution to teams underperforming is to bring in new players but in West Ham’s case, we would say the opposite. Too many cooks spoil the broth and that has exactly been their case. Getting linked with yet another winger makes least sense.
Frei is a quality young player who can ply his trade on both flanks and also as a number ten but there is no place for him at West Ham right now. For the two wide positions, West Ham already have too many players. Michail Antonio, Sofiane Feghouli, Andre Ayew, Gokhan Tore are all quality wingers. Both Manuel Lanzini and Dimitri Payet are also well capable of making an impact on the flanks. So, it looks like Frei will have to struggle for opportunities if he moves to Olympic Stadium.
The 22-year-old played under Bilic in Turkey with the Super Lig giants and was largely impressive there since arriving from Fulham in 2013. He also has a brief experience in English football with Fulham since breaking into the Cottagers’ first team at the age of 17 in 2011 before moving to Turkey two years later. The 22-year-old is struggling for gametime now at the Turkish club but it will only get worse if he makes a switch to East London.
Rather than looking for options in the transfer market, West Ham’s prime focus should be how to get the best out of their current squad which boasts quality in almost every department. The two areas West Ham are in dire need for players are centre-forward and central defence which makes it difficult to identify why they are even linked with yet another winger.
Still only 22, Frei does have a big potential but to fulfil that, he needs to play on a regular basis and a move to West Ham can prove to be career-threatening for the Turkish international. For his age, Frei possesses a remarkable amount of experience of playing 99 games for Besiktas and 33 for Fulham and can be an asset to any mid-table Premier League club who lack quality wide players.
