According to a recent report by the Daily Mirror, Norwich City are among a whole host of clubs that are keeping tabs on the development of Tottenham Hotspur youngster Maxwell Statham. In fact, Daniel Farke’s men lead the race for the signature of the player.
The same source has also revealed that the Canaries are eager to bring the Spurs wonderkid to Carrow Road next summer as Statham’s current contract runs out at the end of this campaign. The North London outfit will now have the option of offering him a pro deal so that he can stay and test his luck in the top tier of England.
There is no doubt that Spurs are looking to build for the future under Mauricio Pochettino’s leadership. Thus, they cannot afford to let their best young talents leave the club. However, it could prove to be a bright addition for Norwich as the player can help sure up their defence so that they are ready for another massive campaign next term.
It the Norfolk club ends up securing promotion back to the Premier League, then it could enhance their chances of recruiting the teenage prospect. For now, Spurs should try to arrange a loan deal for him next summer rather than letting him leave to join a team that could be a dangerous proposition in the English top-flight next term.
Statham was born in Southend who gradually made his way up the youth ranks at Tottenham. He is currently a member of Spurs’ Under-18 team for whom he has been quite impressive throughout this season. However, he has failed to break into Pochettino’s senior team so far which could mean that he is still a long way from being a regular starter in the Premier League.
His commanding displays on the pitch has helped Spurs fight for the English Under-18 Premier League title as they are currently sitting in the 2nd place, just a point below their bitter rivals, Arsenal. There is no doubt that Statham is an up-and-coming prospect who could be a player to look out for in the future. However, he is still quite a raw talent at the moment so Daniel Farke would need to provide him with a nurturing environment at Carrow Road.
Besides his defensive abilities, he doesn’t offer too much going forward unlike most other modern centre-halves. He will be a decent addition to the Canaries squad as he will add long-term value to the organisation. Only time will tell whether Norwich City can fend off stiff competition and successfully manage to win the race for this Under-18 Premier League wonderkid.
