It was a night of disappointment for Tottenham Hotspur as Chelsea beat them at Stamford Bridge in this Premier League clash. The first half looked an evenly poised one for both the sides as they had their fair share of chances. However, in the second half, things went wayward for the visitors as defensive errors from Hugo Lloris and Kieran Trippier sealed a 2-0 win for the Blues.
This defeat ends the title challenge for Spurs as far as this season is concerned. They are now nine points behind the league leaders Liverpool and eight points behind Manchester City, both of whom won their respective matches against Watford and West Ham United on the night.
Here is how the Tottenham players were rated from their defeat against Chelsea.
Hugo Lloris: 5
A disastrous outing for the World Cup winning goalkeeper as he made a number of errors in both the halves. Apart from his ball-handling being uncharacteristically poor, Lloris’ positioning and reflexes let him down in the case of both the goals. He could not close his legs on time on the first occasion while he went ahead unnecessarily to see the ball roll past him into the back of the net from a miscued pass from Kieran Trippier.
Kieran Trippier: 4
A night to forget for the English international. While it was not a very bad first half for him; in the second one, his passes and crosses were inaccurate. The lowest point came in the 84th minute as Giroud’s very first touch on the ball landed at his feet and he just passed it past Lloris into the open net to make it 2-0 for his opponents.
Toby Alderweireld: 6
Brilliant defensive work in the first half followed by a disappointing performance in the second. Could not do anything in case of both the goals though.
Davinson Sanchez: 6
Looked equally clueless with his passing in the second half after having a confident start to the match. Made a few crucial tackles but could not stop Pedro’s astounding run from finding the back of the net.
Ben Davies: 5
Was bogged down by Pedro for most of the match. Can’t remember him making an interception throughout the game to stop the Spaniard.
Harry Winks: 7
A gritty performance from the Englishman in the midfield. Could have been a contender for the goal of the season for sure if that thunderous strike in the first half would have gone in.
Moussa Sissoko: 6
Gave away the ball on a number of occasions in the second half after having a decent first half. Looked a bit fatigued in the second half as well.
Christian Eriksen: 6
Got the ball into the right areas but could not deliver the finishing touch throughout the night. Was dispossessed brilliantly by Pedro in the second half in the Chelsea box.
Eric Lamela: 5
Was bogged down by Kante on the night and could not get to the ball on most occasions. Needs to work on his shooting with Lucas Moura waiting in the wings.
Heung Min Son: 7
Tried his level best to get the ball into the box and get the shots on target but the Chelsea defence proved too resilient to breach for him. Kept breathing on Rudiger’s shoulders throughout the night.
Harry Kane: 6
A lacklustre performance from the Tottenham talisman as he got easily restricted by Rudiger and Luiz. Looked to take his shots but was not able to do any harm to the opposition goal. His frustration showed as he punched David Luiz on his chest in the dying moments of the match as he picked up an unnecessary booking.
