According to a recent report by the Scottish Sun, Arsenal are prepared to reignite their interest for Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney at the end of this campaign. The same source has also revealed that the Gunners are plotting a £25m offer to secure the services of the Scottish defender during the summer transfer period.
The Sun has also disclosed that the North London outfit have been monitoring Tierney’s rise in the Scottish Premiership for two years and are ready to match Celtic’s valuation of the player. With Brendan Rodgers agreeing on a three-year deal with Leicester City to replace Claude Puel, it seems like Tierney’s future at Celtic Park is currently up in the air.
The full-back can follow his manager to England, and an opportunity to play for an elite club like Arsenal could be too good for him to turn down. The 21-year-old has managed to establish himself as a regular starter for the Hoops over the past few years. He has enjoyed a productive campaign so far and has helped the Hoops compete on all fronts this season.
The Douglas born talent has featured in 32 matches for the Bhoys this term, scoring one goal while creating six assists across all competitions. He has also represented Scotland in 12 international games and is expected to play an integral role for his country in the coming years.
The Scottish international is highly versatile and can operate in multiple positions across the pitch. He primarily plays as a left-back but is also quite capable of filling in as a centre-back or feature in a more advanced role down the left wing.
Tierney boasts blistering pace and is always willing to work hard for his team. He also has a strong frame which helps him shield the ball and dribble past his marker down the wide areas. The potential acquisition of the Celtic left-back will undoubtedly bolster Unai Emery’s defensive options at the Emirates Stadium.
However, the Gunners already have the likes of Nacho Monreal and Sead Kolasinac to battle it out for the left-back position in the Arsenal first-team. Hence, Tierney won’t be guaranteed regular first-team football unless one of them leaves the club at the end of this campaign. That player could be Monreal as his contract with the North London club is coming to an end this summer and the club has shown no indication so far about renewing his deal.
There is no doubt that Tierney would be a smart addition to the Gunners backline. He could help them build for a bigger and brighter future under Emery’s stewardship.
