Rangers had secured the signature of Glen Kamara early on in the January transfer window, and the former Arsenal midfielder was set to join Ibrox in the summer. However, in a late turn of events, Steven Gerrard managed to pull off the signing in January instead of waiting until the summer. The club had to shell out £50,000 to land him last month whereas they could have signed him for free if they had waited until the end of the season.
The move was seen as rather unnecessary by many given the options which Rangers had in midfield. Moreover, Glen Kamara wasn’t known for his attacking prowess in the middle of the park. Gerrard had earlier claimed that signing a no. 10 was going to be his priority, but Kamara wasn’t a no. 10 option. Therefore, the opinion was divided on whether the gaffer made the right call by bringing the Dee midfielder last month.
However, ever since the 22-year-old made his debut, he has looked like he belonged in this team for quite some time. Steven Gerrard too recently lavished massive praise on him as he was quoted as saying (The Scottish Sun), ”Kamara has settled in so well. He is a lovely footballer and looked like a Rolls Royce out there at times (Vs Hamilton). We knew he was a good player and we were delighted to get him early. He is building a good relationship in there with Ryan Jack.”
The Finnish international has looked like an absolute tank in midfield, and there is a certain sense of nonchalance in the way he conducts himself on the pitch. Given his physical stature; he is tough to shrug off the ball and his pass picking abilities have also shone brightly.
Rangers would be glad that they made this signing in January as Steven Davis has looked well below par since his arrival and it is clear that Kamara has looked like a better signing at the moment. The Bears are off the pace in the Premiership race but they can definitely try and stop Celtic from winning the Scottish Cup and someone like Kamara can give them control in the middle of the park.
The Gers have now got four solid midfielders in the form of Scott Arfield, Ross McCrorie, Ryan Jack and Glen Kamara and we expect Gerrard to use these four players in crunch games whereas the likes of Steven Davis and Lassana Coulibaly would act as backups.
