Tottenham Hotspur travelled to Lancashire to take on Burnley at the Turf Moor earlier today hoping to close the gap to Manchester City and Liverpool at the top of the league table. Spurs began the match on the offensive but couldn’t manage to make the breakthrough in the first half.
To the surprise of many, the home side were able to grab the lead early in the second half when Chris Wood scored with a powerful header. However, Spurs found a way back into the match just eight minutes later courtesy of Harry Kane’s goal.
Burnley refused to give up and regained their lead in the 83rd minute through Ashley Barnes’ finish from close range. The match ended with a final scoreline of 2-1 in favour of the Clarets which has left Tottenham’s title hopes in tatters.
Let’s take a look at how each Spurs player performed during the match against the Clarets.
GK: Hugo Lloris – 5.5/10
The French keeper ended up conceding two goals on the day as his teammates protecting him let him down.
CB: Juan Foyth – 5/10
It was an average performance from him at the back. He failed to repay Pochettino’s faith in him and his display today was well below par his usual standards.
CB: Toby Alderweireld – 5/10
The Belgian looked rusty in defence and found it hard coping with Chris Wood’s physicality and aerial bombardment.
CB: Jan Vertonghen – 5/10
The Spurs centre-back didn’t command his backline well and was quite mediocre while trying to defend his own box.
RM: Serge Aurier – 5/10
The Frenchman didn’t track back runs in his own half and lacked the cutting edge going forward. It’s time for Trippier to make a comeback and replace him.
CM: Moussa Sissoko – 5/10
A rare poor performance from the French speedster. His recent run of good form finally came to an end today as he looked like a frustrated figure at the centre of the park.
CM: Harry Winks – 5/10
Not enough creativity on the ball, he also failed to stop the Burnley counter-attacks and was rightfully subbed in the second half.
LM: Danny Rose – 6.5/10
The English full-back set up Kane with a nice assist in the second half. Other than that, his contributions in the game were minimal.
CAM: Christian Eriksen – 5/10
When the Danish midfielder has a bad game, it tends to lead towards Tottenham having an off day as well. It was the case once again as Eriksen failed to dictate play in the opposition half and never looked like he could be a potent threat to the Clarets defenders.
ST: Harry Kane – 7/10
The English international marked his return from injury with a goal in the second half. However, it was not enough for Spurs to get any points from this contest.
ST: Heung-Min Son – 5/10
The South-Korean forward looked tired and a bit off the pace while leading the charge up front. He would be hoping for better days in a Tottenham shirt.
Substitutes:
ST: Fernando Llorente – 5/10
The Spaniard couldn’t manage to score when his team needed him to do so the most.
CAM: Erik Lamela – 5/10
The Argentine playmaker was a frustrated figure throughout his time on the pitch.
ST: Lucas Moura – N/A
Not enough time to make an impact.
