According to the Sunderland Echo, Doncaster Rovers forward John Marquis has hinted that he might be moving away from the club next summer. The player has reportedly been on Sunderland’s radar for some time now and was linked with a move to the Stadium of Light in the January transfer window.
Though the Wearside club were not able to land their target in January, this comes as encouraging news for Jack Ross’ side as they look to get back in the Championship in the next season. The addition of the 26-year-old striker would be a big boost for the Black Cats as they look to beef up their attacking options ahead of the new season.
Having lost their attacking spearhead Josh Maja in January to Bordeaux, Sunderland are looking to bring in someone who can fill the vast void left by the Englishman in their squad. Marquis can be the perfect option for that. His stellar form in League One this season has seen him score 18 goals so far. He has also been a brilliant team player and has dished out three assists for his teammates this season.
Apart from having a successful season in the League One with Doncaster, the striker also helped his side reach the 5th round of the FA Cup, where they were eventually knocked out by Crystal Palace. Marquis scored three goals in the competition and led the attack for the Rovers with absolute precision.
His stellar performances have been good enough to attract the eyes of League One rivals Sunderland as they prepare to move back into the Championship next season. Jack Ross would be more than happy to get a player of Marquis’ calibre in his side as he would help beef up the Sunderland attack for the next term.
The League One outfit have endured tough times in the last few seasons as their fall from grace have seen them suffer successive relegations. The road to revival has not been easy for the Black Cats, and they will need quality players in their arsenal to get the better of their opponents.
The addition of a player like Marquis, who has proved his mettle in the League One, would provide a massive boost for their attacking department and the Wearside club should do everything possible to land him next summer.
