Chelsea’s woes this season continued in the FA Cup as well as the holders were knocked out by Manchester United in the 5th round of the competition. One goal apiece from Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba helped the Red Devils qualify to the next round as they outwitted the Blues in their own backyard.
Maurizio Sarri’s men never looked in control of the game as the visitors defended valiantly and hit them on the counter-attack. This defeat piles on the pressure for the under-fire Italian gaffer and it is to be seen what the future has in stock for him.
Here is how the Chelsea players were rated from their disappointing loss against Manchester United.
Kepa Arrizabalaga: 5
A forgettable night for the Spaniard as his positioning looked faulty throughout the match and the Red Devils took full advantage of it.
Cesar Azpilicueta: 6
Tried his level best to get the ball up the pitch as much as possible but was cut out by Luke Shaw and Paul Pogba.
David Luiz: 5
Looked completely out of sorts as the Manchester United attackers deceived him on a number of occasions.
Antonio Rudiger: 5
Looked no better than his defensive partner Luiz.
Marcos Alonso: 4
Went up the pitch with the ball but could not deliver the telling crosses. Could not track back in time, opening up acres of space for the opposition to capitalise on the night.
Jorginho: 4
He was hardly seen near the ball and was beaten on a number of occasions by Herrera and Matic.
N’Golo Kante: 6
Tried to get the ball into the danger area but failed with no one supporting him. Did well while backtracking on a few occasions.
Mateo Kovacic: 5
Was nowhere near the ball and gave it away on a number of occasions.
Pedro: 5
Nothing special from the Spaniard except a few darting runs.
Eden Hazard: 6
The only silver lining for the Blues in the match. Could not make an impact with his teammates not supporting him well enough.
Gonzalo Higuain: 4
Looked no better than Alvaro Morata on the night.
Substitutes
Ross Barkley: 5
His touches were too lousy as he let the opposition take control.
Willian: 6
Deceived the opposition defence on a few occasions. Should have been used earlier.
Davide Zappacosta: NA
Played too little to warrant a rating.
