According to the latest reports from the Mirror, Celtic had sent scouts to see Birmingham City’s forward Che Adams in action against Bolton Wanderers last Tuesday. The report also adds that Manchester United and Arsenal are keeping track of the English forward who is in a rich vein of form at the moment in the Championship.
The forward has managed 19 goals and four assists this season, and one can understand why there is a frenzy down south for this 22-year-old striker. However, given the fact that some heavyweight clubs like Manchester United and Arsenal are interested, Celtic might find it hard to sign him. But something which might work in Celtic’s favour is that they can give the English forward regular game time.
Arsenal boast of two top strikers in the form of Pierre Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette. On the other hand, United have Marcus Rashford and Romelu Lukaku at their disposal. Therefore Celtic might have an advantage in landing him as they can guarantee Adams a regular chance in the first team.
Celtic recently signed the likes of Oliver Burke, Timothy Weah and Vakoun Issouf Bayo in the January transfer window. Out of the lot, only Issouf Bayo has joined permanently. The Hoops are currently short on strikers, and Brendan Rodgers has used Burke (a right winger) as the man up front.
The manager signed Odsonne Edouard for big money in the summer of 2018, but the forward’s form has been patchy. Also, he has been struggling with injuries for the past few months. Moreover, Leigh Griffiths decided to take some time off football, and the Hoops were down to just one forward last year.
So it was a no brainer for the club to move in for forwards in January. However, they will have to rebuild their team once again in the summer as Weah and Burke are going to return to their parent clubs.
Adams’ best asset is his terrific pace, and we believe he could leave quite a few Premiership defenders on their backside. His goalscoring exploits in the Championship suggest that he is calm in front of goal and there is no doubt that he would be a massive coup for Rodgers in the summer.
However, Celtic would need to pay the big bucks to land him as Burnley tried to sign him last month and the bid went to as much as £9m which Garry Monk had no problems in turning down. Therefore it is clear that the in-form striker wouldn’t come in cheap in the summer.
