Rangers have seemingly done well to keep hold of Alfredo Morelos for over a year now. The Colombian looks destined for big things but he has not been able to take his game to the next level. As in the case of most other talents, the Rangers board might want to cash in on him at some point in the future.
At just 22, the Colombian looks like a complete striker and can produce some moments of magic in the final third. He has the pace to go past players and can finish with either foot which makes him a dangerous proposition in and around the opponent’s penalty box. However, his dodgy disciplinary record is a major downer for any of the clubs who would want to come after him in the future.
Nice reportedly (The Scotsman) had put in an £8m offer last month which Gerrard and co. had no problem in turning down. Going by his goalscoring record, since he joined the Ibrox outfit, Gerrard might feel that the striker deserves to have a much higher price-tag.
However, Rangers need to get out of their bubble and try to understand what the rest of the world see in Morelos. The forward has previously disclosed (Daily Mail) that moving to the Premier League is his dream but will a Premier League come up with a higher offer for him in the summer? We highly doubt that.
The way the media portrays him outside of the club has made him look like a villain, and quite a few clubs would think twice before coming in with a higher bid for him. The lack of interest from England in January suggests that Rangers are not exactly sitting on a pot of gold mine at the moment and Morelos needs to start working on his temperament and decision-making to attract a higher fee than £8m in the future.
Most of the clubs would view him as a gamble, so Gerrard needs to take special care of the forward. The Rangers boss has backed him to no ends this season even with all the red cards and the altercations the striker has had on the pitch. The Liverpool legend probably knows how much his current team struggles when Morelos isn’t on the pitch. Therefore, he needs to keep the forward on his side to get the best out of him.
All this can turn out to be a positive thing for Rangers as Morelos might end up staying at the Ibrox for another year. The fact remains that he is still just 22 so Rangers shouldn’t be in any hurry of cashing in on him. However, if they want to make top dollars, they need to make sure that the striker matures otherwise his dodgy disciplinary record will be the biggest obstacle for Rangers in getting a fair price for him.
