Transfer windows are not only just about acquiring players, but it is also integral for the club to keep hold of some of their top talents. Ross McCrorie of Rangers was linked (The Scottish Sun) with a move to Swansea City last month, and it was revealed that Graham Potter was an admirer of the Scottish midfielder. With Rangers bringing in the likes of Steven Davis and Glen Kamara, they could have made a mistake of selling one of their midfielders, but Gerrard stuck to his gun and kept hold of McCrorie.
Dundee were also interested (Daily Record) to bring him on loan for the rest of the season, but there is no doubt that Gerrard made the right call by keeping hold of him. The midfielder has now firmly established himself in the Rangers first-team over the past few months. McCrorie has especially been impressive in the big games when Rangers got the better of Celtic and Aberdeen.
Gerrard shared his thoughts about the 20-year-old’s influence and said, ”Certain games suit Ross. He was really good against Aberdeen and really good against Celtic, when we are looking for that enforcer. I thought in the second half, he was immense, so we are really pleased with him at the moment, and he has come back really strong.”
McCrorie’s recent performance in the Scottish Cup tie against Kilmarnock was impressive. More so after he came down with a nasty head injury but carried on playing. His pressing, football IQ and ability to pick out a pass was there for everyone to see. Moreover, his commitment and dedication have been top notch every time he has stepped on to the pitch. It is one of the main reasons why he often wins those 50-50 duels in midfield.
We all expected Steven Davis to play a more prominent role after joining in January, but currently, there is no doubt that the midfield three of Ryan Jack, Ross McCrorie and Scott Arfield are best suited for Rangers and Davis might have to play bits and pieces role for the time being.
McCrorie is just 20 years old, so Rangers have top talent on their hands who can be a valuable asset for them in the long-run. In a few years, he can be nurtured into one of the best midfielders in the Scottish Premiership, and we even see him as a future captain at the Ibrox. Given his recent performances, it was probably an easy decision for Gerrard to retain his services and it seems like the former Liverpool skipper has made the right call.
