Newcastle United travelled to the Molineaux Stadium to take on Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League looking to earn a result on the night. The Magpies defended valiantly throughout the first half to go into the half-time with nothing to show for their efforts.
The second half was a bit different as Rafael Benitez’s men were a bit more adventurous on the counter. They got a good stroke of fortune when Isaac Hayden’s goal-bound attempt was misjudged by Rui Patricio who ended up conceding a cheap goal at the back. However, Wolves refused to give up without a fight and grabbed a late equaliser courtesy of Wily Boly’s header in injury-time. The match finished with the final score of 1-1 with both teams sharing the spoils.
Let’s take a look at how each Newcastle player performed during the game against Wolves.
GK: Martin Dubravka – 5/10
The Magpies keeper pulled off some solid saves to frustrate the Wolves attackers during the match. However, his last-minute mistake cost his side the win on the night.
CB: Fabian Schär – 7.5/10
He passed the ball well and defended valiantly to restrict the home side from scoring in normal time. Unfortunately for him, his goalkeeper let him down when he misjudged the flight of Adama Traore’s cross which let Boly in to score from close range.
Atleast, Schar also got a handy assist to show for his efforts.
CB: Jamaal Lascelles – 7/10
It was another strong performance from the Newcastle centre-back. He commanded his box with authority and conviction. Lascelles did well to cope with Raul Jimenez’s threat during the encounter.
CB: Florian Lejeune – 7/10
He made some important clearances and had a good game at the back for the away team.
RM: DeAndre Yedlin – 7.5/10
He was always willing to join in on the attack and was a good outlet for the Magpies down the right flank.
CM: Isaac Hayden – 8/10
Hayden was a bit fortunate with his goal. However, to his credit, he was there at the right place at the right time to slot the ball past Patricio from a tight angle.
CM: Sean Longstaff – 6.5/10
The Newcastle youngster retained possession well and worked hard for his team for the full 90 minutes.
LM: Christian Atsu – 6/10
His pace was a good outlet for Benitez’s side going forward. However, he often lacked creativity and invention in the final third.
CAM: Matt Ritchie – 7/10
He worked his socks off during the game and created a few chances in the opposition half.
ST: Ayoze Pérez – 6/10
He was unusually quiet on the night and couldn’t manage to make an impact in the attacking end of the pitch.
ST: Salomón Rondón – 6.5/10
Rondon worked hard for his teammates and was willing to fight for every loose ball in the opposition half. However, his shots lacked conviction and were not good enough to beat Rui Patricio in the Wolves goal.
Substitutes:
ST: Miguel Almiron – 6/10
The Paraguayan was full of energy and running but lacked sharpness inside the Wolves penalty area.
CM: Mohamed Diame – N/A
He didn’t have enough time to make an impact.
RM: Javi Manquillo – N/A
The Spaniard came off the bench to run the clock down for the Magpies.
